The NXT Stars Of Bethlehem

NXT House Show
Sands Bethlehem Event Center - Bethlehem, PA
My interest in WWE has faded quite a bit over the past 15 years or so.  I still keep up with current events in the promotion, but it's mostly through podcasts.  Back in the late 90's, I never missed an episode of Raw or Smackdown.  These days, I watch some of the pay per view events, and I go to live shows when they come within a reasonable driving distance, but I honestly can't remember the last time I actually sat down and watched even part of an episode of Monday Night Raw or Smackdown.  It's got to be over a decade at this point.  For far too many years, the presentation of the WWE "main roster" was cringe worthy, comprised of heavily scripted, poorly written dialogue that makes everyone sound exactly the same, and an inconsistent story arc that made little sense.  Additionally, there's simply too many hours of programming to bother trying to keep up with it, even if it was an enjoyable show, which it hasn't been for many years.  Quite frankly, even most of the WWE pay per view events are tough to sit through these days.

In contrast, I never miss an episode of NXT from Full Sail University.  It's a fantastic, well written show with great matches and consistent storytelling that makes sense.  The backstage skits and diatribes on the microphone are kept to a minimum, and when they do happen, the performers sound like they each have an individual personality.  Also, the programming is just the right length - one hour per week with semi-monthly special event shows called NXT Takeover.  This promotion has been a breath of fresh air in an industry that has felt stale for too long.

This was my second time seeing NXT at this venue, and I very much hope that it won't be my last.  It was an excellent show that delivered on every level.

The show began with a ten bell salute to the late Bruno Sammartino.  The former two-time WWF World Heavyweight Champion, whose second title reign lasted over seven years, passed away on Wednesday.  He was 82 years old.  The opening match began shortly afterward.  Here are the results of the show:

Singles MatchNo Way Jose defeated Chad Lail
(Chad last wrestled as Gunner in TNA)

Singles MatchBianca Belair defeated Candice LeRae

Singles MatchEC3 defeated Kassius Ohno

Tag Team MatchThe Street Profits (Angelo Dawkins and Montez Ford) defeated The Forgotten Sons (Steve Cutler and Wesley Blake)

Tag Team Match

Kairi Sane and Nikki Cross defeated Shayna Baszler and Lacey Evans

Singles MatchTommaso Ciampa defeated Oney Lorcan
(Johnny Gargano ran out to the ring to stop Ciampa from hitting Lorcan with the bell after the match)

Tag Team MatchAleister Black and Ricochet defeated Andrade "Cien" Almas and The Velveteen Dream

Here are some photos from the show:
Kassius Ohno - I've watched him wrestle as Chris Hero in ROH, CZW and Chikara for over a decade.

The Velveteen Dream - one of the most interesting new characters I've seen in a long time.

Former NXT Champion, Adrade "Cien" Almas.  He lost the title two weeks ago to Aleister Black at Takeover: New Orleans

I've been following Ricochet for his entire career, since he first uploaded a personal highlight reel to YouTube.  I don't think he was even out of high school at the time.  The dude is a phenomenal talent.

The new NXT Champion, Aleister Black.  This show was the 13th day of his reign.

The NXT Champion has a lot of incredible tattoo work, including the head of Lilith on his back.

This was taken just before the opening bell of the main event tag team match.

The Loaded Philly

The Loaded Philly
South Philly Cheesesteaks & Fries - Bethlehem, PA
This cheesesteak shop is in the food court at the Sands Casino Resort.  I've never been one of those people who likes to put french fries inside of a burger or hoagie, but I figured I'd give it a shot.  It wasn't bad, but I still prefer to have my fries on the side.

A Different Kind Of Solo Cup

Solo collectors cups
Denny's (2018)
They're really going all out at Denny's with this cross promotion with Solo: A Star Wars Story.  They're selling Topps trading cards from the movie for three bucks a pack.  You can also get one of four collectors cups with a Millennium Falcon lid.

I didn't get the cards, but I couldn't resist having my lemonade in a Chewbacca cup.  I mean, come on!  Who could resist bringing this bad boy home?

They also have Star Wars inspired meals available for a limited time.  Most of them were breakfast foods, like the Lighspeed Slam, the Co-Reactor Pancakes, and the Two Moons Skillet.  They did have one Star Wars cheeseburger called the Blaster Fire Burger.  It's topped with Chipotle Gouda cheese, bacon, lettuce, tomato, onions and a spicy Ghost pepper sauce.  It was tempting, but the Bourbon Bacon Burger looked too good to pass up.

The Shark Was Easier To Believe

MEG: Primal Waters
Steve Alten (2004)
Temple graduate and Phillies fan Steve Alten wrote a series of sci-fi novels about a 70 foot megalodon shark in the South Pacific.  Dan McQuade of Deadspin recently pointed out that the story, which is set in 2019, includes a scene in which Pat Burrell passed Barry Bonds to break the all-time home run record.

The author tried to give Pat a signed copy of the book.  Unsurprisingly, Pat was a jerk about it and refused to accept the book.  That might be why the subsequent paperback release was changed to feature Ryan Howard hitting the epic home run in question.  It doesn't explain why he's given the name Perry Meth to the Giants right fielder.

The Taming Of The Brew

The Taming Of The Brew
The Caldwell Consistory - Bloomsburg, PA
This is a pretty cool annual event.  There are dozens of tables set up with samples of local food and beer.  You can eat and drink as much as you want (within reason, and while supplies last) for the cost of admission.  All of the proceeds go toward the Bloomsburg Theatre Ensemble.

I ate way too much delicious food to remember who made what, but my favorites drinks this year were:
  • Merry Monks by Weyerbacher: a Belgian-style Tripel with notes of spice, banana and pear.
  • Get Pickled by Doc G's: a cucumber Kölsch-style ale brewed with cantaloupes.
  • Pack Dog Peanut Butter Ale by Marley's: a traditional English ale brewed with roasted peanuts.

We Live In A Wheel Where Everyone Steals

Atlas Genius - Bush
Sherman Theater - Stroudsburg, PA
Bush has been one of my favorite bands since I first heard them when I was 14 years old.  This is the second time that I got to see them live.  The first time was in support of their new album, Black And White Rainbows.  This time, they worked in a few more of their hits from the 90's and early 2000's.

The opening act was Atlas Genius.  I'm not super familiar with them, but I know that I've heard Trojans on the radio quite a bit.  It's a good song and they had a very good set, which included a surprise cover of the 1984 Dead Or Alive hit You Spin Me Round.

Scallops At The Powerhouse

Powerhouse Eatery
White Haven, PA
The Powerhouse Eatery building was once a coal-to-steam power plant that provided electricity for the White Haven Sanatorium, which treated patients with tuberculosis from 1907 to 1956.  It was converted into a restaurant in 1989.  The renovations were done in a way that preserved many of the valves, boilers and other infrastructure from the days when this building was an actual power house.

The atmosphere is one of a kind, and the scallops are pretty darn good too!

The Heater

The Heater
Campo's - Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA
I'm pretty sure that I had one of these before, but I can't remember.  At any rate, it was delicious.  The Heater is a cheesesteak made from ribeye steak and jalapeno peppers that have been cooked with hot sauce, then covered in jalapeno cheddar cheese.  It's a very tasty twist on a classic.

It's only the second home game of the season and the guy on the right already looks done.

Twenty Runs!

Saturday, April 7, 2018
Miami Marlins @ Philadelphia Phillies
Citizens Bank Park - Philadelphia, PA

Pitching: Dillon Peters vs. Vince Velasquez
Results: Phillies defeated Marlins, 20-1

I wasn't able to make it to the home opener on Thursday, but I made it to the seventh game of the season, which was the second game at Citizens Bank Park this this year.  Thankfully, it all worked out when the Phillies put up twenty runs against the Marlins.  That's one more run than they've scored in the first six games of the season combined.

The action started on the turnpike before we got to the ballpark.  About halfway to Philly, a Budget Rent-a-Truck that was about 100 yards in front of my car started swerving and then drove through the left guardrail and over the embankment before crashing into a tree.  A bunch of cars (myself included) pulled over to report the accident and to offer assistance.  Thankfully, the driver had no passengers and he seemed unhurt, but I hope for his sake that he took the extra insurance when he rented the truck.

They did some remodeling at the ballpark since last season.  I like the giant World Series replica trophies from 1980 and 2008, and I'm not opposed to the fact that they moved the Wall Of Fame to the wall inside the left field entrance as you walk in.  However, I was extremely disappointed to see that they've removed the franchise timeline from the walls near the bullpen on Ashburn Alley.  It was an incredible display.  You could easily lose an hour looking at all of the photos and reading the captions of the most memorable moments and players in Philadelphia history.  If it has been relocated to somewhere else in the ballpark, I haven't been able to find it.  I really hope that they didn't just get rid of it.

I hate to be overly negative, but I also wasn't too crazy about the giant number statues that are now scattered around the ballpark.  I thought they looked kind of looked cheap and tacky, especially in contrast to the beautiful statues of the players that have been standing for years.  Maybe it's just me, I don't know, but I think they detract from the beauty of the park.

There's a whole new section of the ballpark called The Yard.  It's a pretty large play area set up on the right field side of Ashburn Alley.  It includes a climbing wall (above), a wiffle ball field that looks like a mini replica of Citizens Bank Park, and a hot dog cannon shooting gallery.  If this was around when I was a kid, I would have been running around this place like a crazy person.

As for the game itself, I really couldn't have asked for a better performance from the hometown 9 in my first game of the season.  Vince Velasquez allowed one run on a wild pitch, but he handled the Marlins easily for the rest of the game.  Vinny gave up four hits and a walk, and he struck out 6 batters in six innings of work.  Jake Thompson came in to pitch the final three innings, giving up one hit and somehow walking away with a save despite the lopsided score.

Speaking of the score, the Phillies offense was the story of the game.  Good lord, twenty runs on twenty hits!  Grand slams from Maikel Franco in the 1st and Aaron Altherr in the 3rd.  Another three run homer from Carlos Santana in the 4th, and a solo shot off the bat of Jorge Alfaro in the 7th.  RBI doubles from Franco, Rhys Hoskins and Scott Kingery.  Every Phillies bat in the lineup had at least one hit except for relief pitcher Jake Thompson, including 3-5 nights from Odubel Hererra and Jorge Alfaro.  This was a flat out dominant performance from a team of young, hungry talent.  I expect big things from the Fightin's this season.

It's always nice to hear Harry Kalas singing when you walk out of the ballpark, but this time was especially great.

I Saw The Sein

Jerry Seinfeld
FM Kirby Center - Wilkes-Barre, PA
I feel truly fortunate to have had the opportunity to see my two favorite comedians of all time perform at the Kirby Center.  Back in 2001, I saw the great George Carlin, and I was in the front row tonight to see Mr. Jerry Seinfeld perform on the same stage 17 years later.

There was no photography allowed at the show, so the only picture I have is of an empty stage.  Honestly, I'm glad that they had that rule.  Sometimes I allow myself to be distracted by trying to get a good photo.  It felt good to keep the phone in my pocket and to be fully present in the moment.  I doubt I would have been able to keep my hand still anyway for how hard I was laughing.  Mr. Seinfeld is a true master of the art of stand-up comedy.
