The Many Faces Of Batman

The Many Faces Of Batman
Mahoning Drive-In Theater - Lehighton, PA
This weekend was a celebration of Gotham City's caped crusader with four films spanning 42 years of Batman on the big screen.

Show banner designed by Andrew Kern

The banner, poster, and t-shirt for this event were designed by Andrew Kern.  I think this is my favorite shirt and poster of the season so far.

The icing on the cake was the screen accurate 1989 Batmobile that was parked on the grass under the big screen, courtesy of TV Show Cars.  This is the same company that brought out the 1967 Batmobile to the Mahoning three years ago.  This one was just as incredible!

There was a professional photographer on hand to take pictures of folks standing next to the Batmobile.  They also printed 8x10 copies of the photos for fans who participated.

We had a book club meeting on Saturday, so we had to get a group photo next to the iconic car as well.

The subject of our book club was John Jackson Miller's 2024 novel Batman Resurrection.  I'm happy to say that I was able to finish this one before our book club met to discuss it.  This is pretty unusual for me, but this has been on my list of books that I've wanted to read since I first learned about it.  The story is set in Tim Burton's cinematic universe.  It takes place between the events of his 1989 blockbuster Batman and his 1992 sequel Batman Returns.  If you're a fan of these Batman movies, I strongly recommend it.

There was a vendor event in the hours prior to showtime which was headlined by The Big Kid Store.  They hosted a scavenger hunt on both nights of the event with prizes given to the winners.  We had a lot of fun doing these last year when they were on the lot, but it was insanely hot, so we crashed in our chairs under some sun umbrellas.

One of my favorite things to do when The Big Kid Store comes to the Mahoning is to look through their stock of vintage Garbage Pail Kids.  They didn't have any cards that I needed for my collection, so I hunted to see if I could find cards that had names that matched each of our friends that were on the lot.  The only one I managed to find was this 1986 Series 4 Hy Gene card for Gene, who had his own vendor table near the concession building.

Gene also bumped into WWE veteran and former WXW heavyweight champion Gene Snitsky who was in attendance on Friday to enjoy some Batman flicks.  The pro wrestler, who graduated from nearby Panther Valley High School where my dad taught, lives fairly close to the Mahoning.  I hope that he comes back out for Reel Rumble.

One last vendor that I wanted to mention was the Neshaminy Creek Brewing Company who had cans of their official Mahoning brew Showtime At Sundown in addition to several others.

Under normal circumstances, I would have brough home a case of Summer Dollars which is my favorite beverage of theirs out of the ones that I've tried.  However, I've been following my diet very closely over the past six weeks and I'm already starting to see positive results, so I didn't want to get too off track.  I did take the opportunity to try one that they brought out to the Mahoning for the first time.  It's a dark mild ale called Obsolete Vernacular.  Very tasty!

The cosplays were off the charts on the lot this weekend with Hobbs End Cosplay, Muji, and my Horror Screamover buddy Nick absolutely killing it as The Joker and his gang from Batman '89 and The Dark Knight.

Virgil and his son came out to the lot in awesome Batman and Robin costumes, and for some reason, this dude showed up as Egon Spengler.  There were a lot of other folks in costume that I didn't get photos of, including a guy who had a perfect 1960's tv series Penguin cosplay.

Batman: The Movie (1966)Batman (1989)

The first movie on Friday night was the 1966 Batman movie.  This is the one starring Adam West and Burt Ward that's based on the 60's television series.  We saw this on the big screen three years ago, but it was a pretty rainy night and it was before we met most of our friends on the lot.  I'm glad to have had the opportunity to see it again at the Mahoning on a night that was clear and warm and that we could share the experience with Mike, Kate, Carrie, Johnny, Andrew, and Nick.

The second half of Friday night's double feature was Tim Burton's Batman.  There's no way that I can properly explain how massive this movie was in the summer of 1989.  The only movie in my lifetime that I can think of that even comes close to the media saturation of Batman '89 is The Phantom Menace.  You couldn't turn on your tv, listen to the radio, or go out in public in the summer of '89 without seeing or hearing something Batman-related.

My grandfather too me to see Batman at the Church Hill Cinema shortly after my ninth birthday and my grandparents gave me the movie on VHS later on that year as a Christmas present which I watched countless times.  I was absolutely obsessed with this movie.  Having the opportunity to see a 35mm print of it on the big screen again in my mid 40's was an amazing experience.

The animated film Batman: Mask Of The Phantasm kicked off the double feature on Saturday night.  It's based on Batman: The Animated Series which I did watch when I was a teenager, but for some reason, this movie passed me by and this screening at the Mahoning was my first time seeing it.  It's a damn good movie!  I wish that I had caught it in the 90's, but at the same time, I'm kind of glad to have had the opportunity to see it for the first time on the big screen.

The final movie of Batman Weekend was the 2008 film The Dark Knight.  This screening was my second time seeing it on 35mm at a drive-in theater.  My wife and I saw it during its original theatrical run at the Laurel Drive-In Theater in Hazleton back when we were still dating.  It's an action packed movie that keeps you on the edge of your seat, but I was kind of shocked to find that I don't dig it as much today as I did in the summer of 2008.  It's not that I didn't enjoy it, but it's one of those movies that just keeps coming at you without giving the story a second to breathe.  It's a movie that every fan of the caped crusader needs to see at some point in their lives, but I found the pacing to be jarring to the point where I'd have to rank this as my fourth favorite film of the event.

And that's a wrap on The Many Faces Of Batman.  There are so many movies in the Batman cinematic universe that they could probably run this back for the next couple of years without repeating a film.  I'm sure it will be fun if they do, but I can't imagine any combination of films topping this past weekend's event.  This was a gem!

The Hardcore Icon

Terry Brunk
1964 - 2025
Professional wrestling legend Sabu passed away earlier today.  His career spanned forty years with stops in USWA, FMW, New Japan, All Japan, WCW, WWF/E, and TNA, but he is best known for his time as one of the pillars of Extreme Championship Wrestling.  His death comes just three weeks after his retirement match; a no robe barbed wire match that was the main event of Joey Janela's Spring Break 2025.  He was 60 years old.

WWE Is In The Lucha Libre Business

My interest in pro wrestling has taken a nosedive over the past ten or fifteen years, but the announcement that the parent company of WWE has purchased the lucha libre promotion AAA has gotten me to sit up and take notice.  I'm not sure if this is a good thing, but it's definitely interesting.

The Duke Of Dorchester

Pete Doherty

Happy 80's birthday to one of the most entertaining wrestlers from the 80's that you've probably never heard of, and a man who sounded like a mob-connected Gilbert Godfried on color commentary, the one and only "Duke of Dorchester" Pete Doherty.

Steven Flowe Is On His Way

Steven Flowe
The Superwrestlers (2024)
Last month, a Chicago based promotion that's billed as Earth's Strangest Pro Wrestling Show introduced the world to a new indy wrestling character that is pure genius.

Stephen Flowe is a 90's grunge rock character who comes to the ring carrying a guitar and wearing a flannel with another flannel tied around his waist.  If it isn't obvious enough that his name was inspired by the second track on Pearl Jam's debut album, his entrance theme will really drive it home.  It's a parody of Even Flow, but most of the lyrics are just his name being sung over and over again.

In an interview with Sean Ross Sapp, Stephen revealed that the Cokane from JCW came up with the idea for this gimmick while the two were traveling.  It started out as a joke a few years ago, and it has now come to life in the squared circle.

The Devil's Favorite Dealer

Cokane
JCW (2024)
It has been many years since I've kept up with independent wrestling and even longer since I've been a part of the Juggalo scene, but this is too good not to mention.  Someone is wrestling in a black and white Kane mask and ring gear.  At first glance, I thought that this was a character that presented an alternate reality version of The Big Red Machine if he joined the nWo, but that's not what's going on here.  The real gimmick is so much better.

Yup... his name is Cokane.

This wrestler ends his matches by pulling out a bag of "mysterious white powder" which allows him to hulk up and deliver his finishing move, the Coke Slam.

A Giant At The Gym

House Show Card
World Wrestling Federation (1984)
There has been professional wrestling shows at St. Joseph's Gym in Hazleton, Pennsylvania for many years.  This match list is from a show that took place 40 years ago today.  It featured a main event of "The Polish Hammer" Ivan Putski vs "Rowdy" Roddy Piper, and Andre The Giant vs "Mr Wonderful" Paul Orndorff. The Master And Ruler Of The World

Sid Eudy
1960 - 2024
It was reported yesterday that Sid Eudy has passed away at age 63 after battling cancer for several years.  He was one of the coolest big men in the history of professional wrestling, and a dude who I was always happy to see in the ring.

Pops

Afa Anoaʻi
1942 - 2024
A true legend passed away yesterday at the age of 81.  I've met a lot of professional wrestlers in my 40+ years of being a fan, and the vast majority of them have been very cool people, but none of them were as kind as this man was to me.  Rest in peace Pops, and thank you.

Ohh Yeah!

Macho Man Slim Jim Holder
Onvo Travel Plaza - White Haven, PA
We saw this huge Slim Jim holder featuring "Macho Man" Randy Savage by the registers at the Onvo Travel Plaza when we stopped at IHOP last weekend.  Unfortunately, the display was not for sale.  If it was, this would be sitting on my kitchen counter right now.  I'm not sure what I'd fill it with, but damn it, I'd find something!

I Have Come Here To Chew Bubblegum And Watch Wrestling

Reel Rumble VThey Live
Mahoning Drive-In Theater - Lehighton, PA
Last night, I wrote about the wrestling half of Reel Rumble V.  This post is all about the feature film that many of the wrestlers stuck around to watch with us.

Show banner designed by Andrew Kern

One of my favorite sci-fi action movies of all time was shown on the big screen from an original 35mm print when the sun went down after an afternoon of pro wrestling matches on the lawn.

As is often the case, there were plenty of folks in attendance who came in cosplay.  This very cool dude in a Joe Bob Jamboree t-shirt came as one of the aliens from the movie we were about to see.

They Live is a masterpiece of a film.  It premiered on November 4th, 1988 and was largely inspired by writer/director John Carpenter's dissatisfaction with Reagan-era politics and the ways that the rich get richer while the poor and middle class struggle just to get by.  The message of this film still rings true 36 years later, and unfortunately, it probably will continue to do so 36 years from now.

I saw this film for the first time in 1992 when my dad and I were living in South Florida.  He was flipping through the TV Guide one day when he saw that there was a movie coming up on one of our channels that starred a professional wrestler that he and I are both huge fans of, "Rowdy" Roddy Piper.  We both saw it for the first time that day in our living room in Boynton Beach and we both loved it.  It was one of the first movies that I bought on DVD when the format was still in its infancy, and I've watched it dozens of times in the years since.  Getting to see it on 35mm on the big screen at the drive-in is just the latest in a long list of dreams that have come true in Lehighton, PA.

The Return Of Reel Rumble

Mahoning Drive-In Theater - Lehighton, PA
There was a time in my life that I tried to attend as many independent wrestling events in the tri-state area that I possibly could; particularly Ring Of Honor and Chikara.  I still enjoy professional wrestling, but I have too many hobbies and there aren't enough hours in the day to keep up with them all.

The in-ring portion of last year's Reel Rumble event was rained out, so the last indy wrestling event I attended was Reel Rumble III.  This year's Reel Rumble V event included five matches with several wrestlers that we got to see at the Mahoning in 2002, and some familiar faces from the indy wrestling scene that I followed more closely in the years before I went back to college.

The main wrestler from this card that I remember from his days in Chikara and ROH is HallowickedUltraMantis Black once led The Order Of The Neo-Solar Temple in Chikara.  Drew Gulak and Tracy Williams worked in Chikara as a masked tag team called The Colony (Soldier Ant and Green Ant), and Lucky 13 wrestled in Chikara as the masked Retail Dragon.  The card also included ROH-veteran Cheeseburger, and folks who we got to see at Reel Rumble III like Big Dan Champion, Kodama, "La Chica" Clara Carreras, Erica Leigh, and Jeff Cannonball.

Most of the photos that you're going to see on this post were taken by the very talented Sergio Valentino (aka: pixematize) who kindly allowed me to share them here.  A small handful of them are mine.  Those will be the ones that don't look nearly as good as Sergio's.

Results:
  • Athan Promise defeated Ultimo Ant
  • The Lost Boys (Miles Penn and Ryan Ryzz) defeated Club Soda (Jeff Cannonball and Puf)
  • Erica Leigh defeated Vita Von Starr

  • "Honey Mustard" Drew Gulak defeated "Hot Sauce" Tracy Williams
  • Trios Match
Cheeseburger, Big Dan Champion, and La Chica Carreras defeated Hallowicked, Kodama, and Lucky 13

Many of the wrestlers hung out at the merch tables after the show to meet fans, sign autographs, and take pictures.  Ben, Avery and I all wanted to get a picture with the dude who we all became fans of at the 2002 Reel Rumble, the one and only Big Dan Champion.

I didn't want to bug the whole roster for a photo, especially since my spending money is a little slim after VHS Fest, but I had to get a picture with Hallowicked.  The photo on the left was taken on May 26th, 2007 at Chikara Anniversario in Hellertown, PA.  A lot of things have changed over the seventeen years between these two photos, but two things that have not are the fact that he's still wrestling in some of the most fun matches I've ever seen, and I'm still a fan of independent wrestling.

And that's a wrap on another fun wrestling event under the big screen at the Mahoning Drive-In Theater.  That alone would have been worth the price of admission, but we also got to see the greatest movie ever to star a professional wrestling legend once the sun went down.  More on that tomorrow.
